The column pictures in the Erfurter cathedral originating after 1506 firmly show predominantly “Catholic” themes and give thereby as creed its commissioner testimony for the theological controversies of the 16th century. In Erfurt a unique dual-confessional culture developed in the argument of town councillor and prince bishop that led their dispute not only to word and scripture, but also to “reasoning through images“.
The exhibition brings up for discussion the iconographic tradition of these pictures just like their theological, liturgical and culturally historical background and places it in the context of the newly developing Protestant image culture. The column pictures will have to be seen in the cathedral, while in the Angermuseum works of the particular collection as well as items on loan are presented.
