The exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Lucas Cranach the Younger. It presents him as a multi-faceted personality: as prudent patriarch, city treasurer, clever mayor and energetic entrepreneur. But above all, it focuses on the artist Lucas Cranach as a royal contractor, painter of Reformation altars and epitaphs, outstanding portraitist and talented draftsman.
During the years of confessional conflicts after Luther’s death, Cranach the Younger’s paintings contributed importantly to the propagation of the new faith. He expanded the pictorial representations of Luther and Melanchthon, two of the iconic figures of the Reformation. His society portraits testify to his canny application of the painterly possibilities available to him. Until his death in 1586, Lucas Cranach the Younger led one of the largest and most productive art studios of Europe in Wittenberg.
Cranach was a skillful artist who was a master of his craft, and he occupied a central position within a large personal and professional network. All these aspects are conveyed by masterpieces from German and international collections as well as fascinating multimedia depictions. Taken together, they provide a long overdue introduction to Lucas Cranach the Younger as the previously undiscovered master from Wittenberg. The exhibition is on view in the Augusteum, the front building of the Luther House.
